Energy Resolution versus Electron Count-Rate
By decreasing the Pass Energy value we get better energy resolution which allows us to separate and identify more chemical states. Unfortunately the increase in Energy Resolution produces a much lower Electron Count-Rate. A lower count-rate means that we must collect data for a longer time to get a useful S/N ratio. This chart can be used as a guide that helps you decide if a smaller Pass Energy setting is worth the time used to get a useful S/N.
